When you’re walking into an on-camera audition, there is a grocery list of expert acting tips that can help you own the scene. At Berg Studios, our instructors have compiled some great notes that we share with our students – to empower, encourage and educate them on how to get the most from their auditions.

Perhaps one of the most valuable tips in our packet – Remember your arc!

The concept is simple – No matter how long or short your scene is, you always need to be mindful of its beginning, middle and end as it pertains to your acting.

In the beginning… identify, “where am I coming from” and “what happened immediately before this scene.” This will influence how you respond physically and emotionally. Use a physical button at the beginning to signify your direction and to trigger what is to follow.

In the middle… Ask yourself, “What am I searching for?” Your question will put you in the state of discovery, where your imagination can be free and spontaneous in your pursuit of the unknown. This journey itself is the key, rather than actually attaining an answer.

In the end… Ask yourself, “Where am I going to?” The evolution of your scene leads you in a direction. Your choices within the middle of the scene are what navigate you towards a destination. Once again, use a physical button at the end of the scene, to let your body showcase where you and your scene partner are heading.

From start to finish, you now have an arc – one that is engaging, and helps viewers to accept your character within the scene.

Good luck in your next audition!!
