Recently I took an “On Camera” acting class, which was all about actually acting for the camera itself and less about your acting technique. It was very interesting to me to read about this class, because I had never taken one like it before but had oftentimes heard friend talking about their classes that they had taken just like this.
After taking the class I am confident in saying that acting for the camera still has a lot—mostly—to do with your technique and what you put into your performance before you go into that audition, callback, or onto set for the day. There is so much that I felt was left out in this acting for the camera class about actual character development and scene study.
That being said, it was helpful in knowing things about the camera, my line delivery, and about walking into the audition room, that I didn’t know or realize before. I thought there were a lot of helpful points that were brought up throughout the class. I was grateful that I had the opportunity to take this class because it was with someone very experienced in the industry at a studio that I personally have a lot of respect for.
So, in conclusion, my advice to you would be to take an acting for the camera class, but also make sure you have your basics really down and that you are still enrolled in that proper scene study class while you are taking the other one. It is so important to have your work down pat so that you have the regulated and sure-way of building a life, character, and believable work. Acting for the camera is important too, but the actual work that goes into it before is far more important and is what the casting directors will really see.
