Much like a piece of furniture from Ikea, and acting career is hard to build on. I would liken auditioning in Hollywood to building an Ikea rolling chair with a rocking back, and extending legs, with no instructions at all. Do you think that it would be easier to start with this chair that I just described, or with something much more simple like a small table, which included instructions (and probably from an easier store too).
If you are like me, you probably chose the easiest thing to get started with. That way you know the ropes a little bit more, you know how things work around the building area, and you are acquainted with the tools that you have to use before you go diving into the much more difficult, impossible project. This is what I like to imagine, in the acting world, as going a little bit independent. Coming up with your own ideas, and making your own projects, when it seems like there are no yes answers from anyone anywhere can be an easier place to start.
Here are some things that you can get started with on your own, without having to hear a single yes from anyone (except for the people you want to be a part of it, who are probably your friends anyway so there’s no reason they would say no):

-Making your own improv group
-Writing a short play and putting it up in a park
-Making an experimental film project
-Recording your own work and putting it up on youtube to share
-Putting together a performance night for all of your friends
-Making two-minute videos about your day and putting it up somewhere
-Writing your own monologs
-Making your own acting class
-Inventing theater games
-Having an active actor’s Instagram
-Keeping a daily video blog

There are a million things you can do that you don’t need to hear “no” for. Just get some friends together and create, create, create. There’s no better revenge to the evil “no” of the industry than making great things that you’re proud of, so get out there and do something!
