If you were like me last night, you bundled up in bed and enjoyed this cold weather and watched the 2018 Golden Globes. It was a lovely event with a strong message threaded throughout: Times Up! Seth Meyers was an amazing host who made just the right jokes at just the right times and handled the recent event excellently. This past year has been an amazing year for art; we have had some of the best TV and some truly meaningful film being made. It was hard for me to pick who I wanted the winners to be, but I was really inspired by who ended up being recognized.
The event was full of women standing up for other women, and uplifting speeches about the future of the industry from here on out. The most notable of these speeches, of course, was the Cecil B. DeMille award, given to Oprah, who delivered an absolutely beautiful speech about equality, justice, and creativity in our industry and why we need to work to inspire the young people of our society and prove to them time and time again that their dreams can come true.
Another project I was so happy and excited to see win was the incredible film written and directed by the inspiring Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird. This film communicated so much to so many people, it was about your awkward teens, my relationship with my mother, and my friend’s experience with college and high school. Everything was so personal and so heartfelt. I completely loved this movie and seeing Greta Gerwig get the recognition she deserved for it was very inspiring!
As an artist, you have goals. You have things that you want to achieve in this career and this life, and you have your reasons for it. You want to create an impact on this world, and this is the time to do it. Get inspired, get to work, and make the difference that you want to see. I hope you enjoyed the Golden Globes as much as I did this year! Side note—James Franco’s speech was absolutely hilarious.
