Recently I have been studying up a lot more on acting as a craft than I ever have before. It is quite exciting to be reading books about the industry like this because I find myself having a greater and greater understanding of what it takes to be a successful actor and artist in today’s day and age. It can seem like anyone can have the platform these days. A YouTube channel and some interesting content and suddenly you’re the next big thing Hollywood has to offer. I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with this, except that I felt uncertain of my exact place in the industry. This feeling augmented recently for reasons of which I am not certain, but I did know that in order to make these feelings subside, it was my responsibility as an actor to study up and make my craft the best it possibly could be. Pilot season is so close, and I, like many of you, am in it to win it!

This is the exact reason that it is important to have a motivation running behind your entire career. There is nothing that will drive you more than a strong belief in why you are doing what you are doing. It is something personal and can be serious and deep in meaning, or more fun and light, but it is always something that is important to you as a person, as an artist. When you have this driving force, all of the rejection, the classes you have to take, the distances you need to drive, literally everything, can be swept aside as unimportant because you can always look back at this one force that will keep you going. It probably goes beyond “Fame” or “Fortune” and affects you on a personal level.

What is a change you would love to see in the world? How do you feel like your art will help the people around you? Why this career at this time? These are some questions that can help you find a driving force. And you can have this force for every job you do, even every audition. I can be “I need to go on a vacation and this job pays for that,” as simple as it sounds. There is no limit to what goals you can set for yourself so why not aim as high as humanly (or as other-worldly!) as possible? Setting these goals and high causes for yourself will really help drive things in your career. If you have ever felt out of place as an artist or too “in your head” just remember that we have all been there at one point or another and it is nothing to worry about. Just recall what it is you are doing this all for and things will work out for you!
