In general, there aren’t many things you have to or have not to do as an actor. There aren’t really any strict yeses or no’s in the industry, but there are some things that you can avoid that will make you more desirable and seem far more professional to a casting director. Here they are!

-Don’t wear heavy fragrances to your audition. A very light smell is okay to wear to your audition, but you never know how a casting director will react, or how they feel about a lot of perfume. Sometimes people are very allergic to perfumes, so it’s better that you assume safely and don’t wear anything too smelly.

-Have your preparation on lockdown. Before you go into your audition, make sure you’ve done your work beforehand by learning your lines, doing whatever research of character work you do, and make sure you are fully ready to knock your audition right out of the park.

-Don’t be loud in the waiting room. When you have entered the waiting room and signed in, you want to take a seat and wait for your name to be called. Remember while you are waiting there that they are doing auditions (typically in the next room) and that they are trying to focus and do a job well done. It is disrespectful to not only the casting director but also the actor auditioning to be loud and chatty in the waiting room.

-Be friendly when you walk into the audition room. A nice smile and a “My name is [insert your name here], good to meet you,” will suffice. But even if you are having a bad day, or feeling angry, or whatever it is, you need to walk into the audition room as someone who other people will want to work with, and being nice and friendly is a great way to show the casting directors just that!
