There’s great value to doing smaller projects that you maybe don’t get paid for, or don’t get paid a lot for, it’s important to do because of the connections you can make and the friends you will meet while working. There’s also a lot of credence to the experience you will get out of working on independent projects. People are typically less experienced when working on student films, or projects you just do with friends and this can be a fantastic learning experience because you really get to see all of the work that goes into making film.

If you have the opportunity to help a friend out on their project, or their shoot, it is so important that you say yes. If it fits in your schedule and it is something you have any interest in, then you should absolutely agree to help them out. There’s no reason not to! I personally believe that any acting is better than no acting, so if you have a chance to make a friends dream come true, why wouldn’t you want to give it your all and make it happen?

Eventually, you’re going to need help. And when you do, you’ll be able to call upon your friend that you helped, or maybe even one of the people that was on set with you who you met (because you were being super friendly and happy and trying to meet anyone and everyone you possibly could!)

So whenever you get the chance, help your friends out. Work on those smaller scale projects, go out of your way to help someone achieve their goals, and in general, MAKE friends in the industry. It’s always great to see the people around you do amazing things, and also opens the gate even further for you to do amazing things of your own!
