Most of the time, an actor starting out in the industry has few people that want to give them the world and every acting job in it. There are not a ton of people who love to throw admiration and positivity at new actors, but agents are definitely one of the people that do. If you have an agent, there are some guidelines that should be followed purely out of respect for these people. A good agent should be getting you every audition possible and encouraging you to keep going no matter what, agents aren’t getting paid until you are getting paid so it’s important to remember that they usually have your best interest at heart and are just trying to make your dreams come true. Until you are working constantly and making THEIR dreams come true in turn, it’s important to follow these guidelines.

1.            Be respectful of your agents and what they know about the industry. If they ask you to update your IMDb page, get new headshots, try an acting class, or anything else, they know what they are talking about. Thinking that you know more than an agent about getting auditions for actors is not very wise because that is their job and their only focus.
2.            Accommodate them as best as you can. If your agent gets you an audition for Thursday morning at 11am but you were planning on meeting with a friend for brunch, you should call that friend and move your schedule around so that you can make it. Your agent is working very hard to get you auditions and it is not helpful if you are unwilling to work with them on a schedule and accommodate the auditions that they DO get for you.
3.            Tell them about the good, and try to forget about the bad. If you finally finished that short film that you have been working on for a long time, send it to them! Agents are always happy to see your work and they may love it and want to get you more auditions because of it! If you had to wait for 45 minutes at an audition and are grumpy about it, keep it to yourself or tell someone who is not your agent. There isn’t a lot that they can do about something like that.
4.            Ask them for their advice. If you need help or advice on something going on in your career, turn to your agents. They know what makes casting directors call certain actors in and they understand how to make a career busier and have more going on. Your agents are there to help you and make sure that you have the career that you are going for, so take advantage of that!

All in all, you want to make sure that you are keeping a great relationship with your agents because they are the people that really want to push your career forward and help you have the career that you want and that you dream about. Make sure you keep your relationship with your agents strong so that you can achieve your goals and keep yourself and them happy!
