I recently booked a small scale, no budget job that I really wanted. I loved the idea and the people behind it. It was something that I didn’t care about making money on because it really inspired me and spoke to me on a personal level. When I got the schedule and everything after being offered the role and not having accepted quite yet, I saw that it was a much longer and bigger commitment than I was able to do. Some of the dates I was already going to be out of town because of a prior booking, other dates would have prevented me from going out on auditions for pilot season.
Although this was a job that I was interested in doing, in the end I decided to not go through with it because it would have prevented me from dong other things that could have a different effect on my career. My representatives are counting on me to be a force for them this season and to do this project would have ultimately meant letting them down. I don’t want to do this because they have been there helping me every step of the way for the past year, pushing me in the right direction.
The acting industry is a combination of good timing, talent, connections, and smarts. You have to know what the correct timing is for the passion projects you want to do. Pilot season, for example, is probably not the best time to start a long-term commitment to a passion project that may never see the light of day. It is all about playing the game to the best of your ability and this sometimes means making the decision that isn’t the one you thought you wanted.
