Break out and break free!
I wanted to write this post about “stretching out” and doing what you don’t, or won’t, normally do. Basically, playing around outside of your comfort zone. As an actor, you will find yourself in situations that you may not have expected, or be asked to do something you’re not comfortable with (I’m not talking about something like being asked to get naked during an audition – that’s TOTALLY not OK and you wouldn’t be asked to do it by anyone reputable. So unless you’re doing porn, if you’re asked to do that – leave!). I’m talking about maybe you’ll be at an audition and the casting person will ask you to read the audition in a way that is very different than the way you prepared it. And say you don’t feel that you’re a very strong comedic actor and the casting person wants you to yuck it up a bit. The audition isn’t the right time to try it out. Right?

What I’m talking about here is I want you to for you to stretch out – be adventurous! If you don’t think you can sing – take a singing class. If you don’t think you do accents very well, order every eat-out meal with a different accent! Learn to ride a unicycle – well. Try new things – ask someone for directions to a place you know the way to already and act confused and try to get the person giving you the directions to say it different ways.

The more things you try and the more often you try them the more comfortable you’ll be having to think “On the fly” at an audition or a job!

I’m sure you can think of tons of things you can try. Let us know some of your ideas at: [email protected] and let us know how it went!

Have fun with stretching your limits and I guarantee your auditions will be better, and you’ll have more fun with them.

Be well!
