As an actor you should constantly be trying to expand and deepen your understanding for life, people, and everything that has to do with the business of being human That is, after all, what you are here to do in your art. Showing people what it means to really live, and experience life for real, these are goals that artists usually have.
The biggest way you can take control of your life is to educate yourself and continue to keep getting better and getting more certain in your career. This is done by reading, watching the best movies, watching plays, and getting up there and doing it yourself. Here are some suggestions of great “actor books” to read:

– An Actor’s Work
– An Actor Prepares
– A Challenge For The Actor
– The Art Of Acting
– Respect For Acting
– On Acting

Some other things you should be reading that aren’t necessarily educational are scripts and plays! You should read as much as you can get your hands on because it will absolutely educate you on what it means to create a character, and how characters develop over the course of a script. The more scripts you read the more you will know about them. So next time you get an audition for a horror film, you will know to look at the page number, and if it is in the third quarter of the feature, you know that all of your friends are probably dead already, and you can adjust your performance accordingly.
There are so many things you can do to educate yourself further on being an actor, what it means to perform, and how you can ameliorate your skills in performance, but reading is a great place to start. It’s easy, cheap, and super effective when you apply what you find to be workable and important into your every day acting, auditions, and the work that you book. So keep moving on up, and educating yourself along the way to achieving your goals! I have read all of those book, countless scripts and plays, and cannot even begin to tell you how many times I have been so grateful that I have the information at hand.
