This year the ever-insulting Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes for the FOURTH time, and surprisingly was less insulting than he ever has been. I feel there will be no need for hate mail to be sent to his house, or scathing blogs written about him. In fact, he brought up some interesting points, like how “The Martian” was considered to be a “comedy”, or how lame it is for NBC to be hosting this award show when they are the only network without a single nomination. Which brings me to my opinions on the wins and losses of the night…
First, I’d like to address the show Mr. Robot, which I binge watched 6 episodes of (they’re each an hour long) on a flight that was delayed landing. This was a great show. I loved it and I am so happy to see Christian Slater in action in a role with depth, and nothing that he would normally be cast as. Although I did expect Mr. Robot to sweep the awards and for Rami Malek to take home to trophy I was pleasantly thrown off by the fact that Jon Hamm won for Best Actor in a drama for Mad Men, which aired its last episode on May 15th, 2015, it seemed almost too passé to give a glance to, but alas I was not disappointed with their choice.
I was very excited to see Rachel Bloom win for her role in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the show insane enough to make you want to come back to it week after week. I just have to comment as well on Brie Larson, not only for how amazing she was in her most recent award winning film, Room, but also for just how stunning she looked at the award show. I loved everything about her outfit and physically she just looked amazing. Women killed it this year at the Golden Globes. From the speeches they gave to the awards they won, even Ricky Gervais bringing to light (with a sarcastic joke none the less) the issues on women’s pay.
Lastly, and probably one of the more important points of the show, was the moment Eva Longoria and America Ferrara stepped up to the stage to present the next award. Their quippy, quick, and hilarious but true remarks about how they are not every other Latina actress, and YES they all do have their own looks and identities really shed light on the fact that we need more diversity in Hollywood and how well and alive racial discrimination is, a subject that has been talked about more than ever in the recent years, but still not enough.
The fight continues for women as well as minorities to gain completely equal rights everywhere continues and we all play a part in that. The Golden Globes really set an interesting stage, and I am excited to see what the Oscars brings to the table this February!
