Since a young age, I have been able to do many accents. For some odd reason, it’s just an ability I am very lucky to possess, and when I hear an accent, it is not long until I am able to imitate it very easily. Today I went to an audition where the character was supposed to have a French accent. This is an especially hard accent to master because in French, your mouth barely opens, whereas, in English, we try to open our mouths as wide as possible with every word we speak. This audition today was very interesting because I was able to hear the people who were going ahead of me! Listening in on their auditions was very interesting, because I was able to hear the different variations of accents, and it also helped me improve my own. This experience really made me realize the important of accent work in the industry today!
If you are already great with accents, then good for you! You have a leg up there, where others don’t. If you are an actor who feels not so confident in your accent work, then I have some good old tips for you!

-Watch movies: If you are trying to figure out how to imitate an accent, watch a movie in that language. This will give you a feel for how they say words in their own language, and will also be helpful because you will be able to see how their mouths move into the words.
-Listen to the music: the most important part of this one would be the SING ALONG! When you listen to music in a different language and try imitating it, you will develop a much stronger ability to do that accent. Your mouth will form to the different words being said, and you will have an easier time speaking English with that accent.
-Record yourself: if you have been doing your accent work for quite some time, you know that mastering an accent is quite a difficult task to take on. The most important thing about doing accents is that it sounds legitimate. When you listen to yourself in real time, you could sound different than you do recorded. That is why it is always a good idea to listen to your voice while trying to master an accent.

While practicing accents, you may feel like a fool, occasionally, speaking to yourself and sounding weird. But remember that you are an actor, and your job is to commit! So commit to your accent, and you will do well!
