One of the best ways to prepare for an audition or a role that you have booked is to actually film yourself while doing it. Of course, the best thing to do is to have all of the material memorized and figured out, do your character work, and practice until you have it down cold. But I find that when going on auditions, especially taped ones, I am nervous and it can affect my audition performance. This isn’t good especially because that is exactly what the casting director is judging you on; can you perform well under pressure and do it again three times in a row?
I have found in the past that when I am filmed for the first time my performance is usually a little shaky, no matter how many times I have practiced it in the mirror, no matter how great I feel about it, there is just something about being filmed while performing that puts you a little bit on edge. That is why I have found it helpful to record myself several times in a row doing the audition so that I can feel accustomed to and totally comfortable with being filmed. That way, when I go into the audition room, I know from experience that I am not only totally natural on film, but also am aware of how I look and what body language I am using, etc…
Filming yourself can be a very useful tool when preparing for a major audition! If you use this technique and like it, let us know in the comments below!
