This past week I started up at UCB Improv school in Los Angeles on Sunset for Improv classes. Although I am an actor who has quite a bit of experience in improvisation (several years of classes, shows, etc…) everyone is required to start out at the “beginner” level and may or may not be moved up from that point.

Thursday was my first class, and to put it lightly, I was not very interested in attending class. I have some friends who go there and I was weary of their methods of improv and teaching styles, but I thought, “Its not that expensive, it could be fun, and it could help me in my career.” So I bought the 8 week beginner course and went in. After class, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoyed it, but still am finding myself to not be completely committed to my time there.

The first thing that I don’t fully agree with is their missing class policy. It is extremely strict, stating that if you are to miss two classes, you will be kicked out of the class and not allowed to move onto the next level, needing to retake the first one. There are no makeup classes that compensate for missing one class. I find that to be a difficult rule to stick to as a contently auditioning actor, but I will have to try my best.

Overall, its an experience that I am excited to see pan out. I will be updating you guys on every class every Friday so make sure to look out for more!
