Here are some of the films that were nominated for Oscars you probably haven’t seen and definitely should. There were so many amazing films in the shorts categories, which usually end up being some of my favorite films I have seen all year. Here are the ones that stood out to me that I think you should be watching too!

-The Eleven O’Clock (live-action Australia): A film about a patient who believes he is a psychiatrist going to see his actual psychiatrist. As their sessions continue, the lines blur between psychiatrist and patient and neither really knows where they stand. You can watch this movie on Youtube and Google Play.

-The Silent Child (live-action UK): This film follows the story of a deaf child growing up being misunderstood, undiagnosed, and generally not listened to. It is a story about love, growing, and learning. It won for best short and is truly worthwhile to watch. You can view it on Youtube and Google Play.

-Negative Space (animated France): A film about what it means to leave and more importantly, what it means to stay, with regards to a distant father-son relationship. This is a beautifully animated short and it is narrated in English. The animation is so specific and carefully crafted it almost makes me want to change careers. Watch it on unifrance.org

-Heroin(e) (documentary US): This is the story of three women in Huntington, West Virginia, who are fighting the opioid epidemic by saving one life at a time. It is a beautiful and trying story of fight, forgiveness, and an issue that is affecting far too many people in our country. Watch it on Netflix.
