There are a few phrases I really hate to hear. One of the things that just rubs me the wrong way is when a person uses the above phrase as a compliment. If you make a great cake, dress someone really well, or show any type of competence at anything and someone tells you, “well if acting doesn’t work out…” it can be taken as a joke, but it can also be a dig on who you are as a performer, as an artist, and your career choice.

Acting can be tough! It is not a game for people who cannot handle rejection at all and it is not something that is always easy and simple. There are a lot of different moving parts in the world of acting and it can be hard to feel positive at all times! Just ask any successful actor whose TV series ended, or feature stopped production. They are out of a job.

Having hobbies and filling up any time you do not need free for auditions, acting classes, or whatever else you need to do to be ready to make your career happen, is totally fine. But when people start suggesting you do something else for a living, or to even hint at the possibility of “acting not working out…” it’s counterintuitive to your success and it holds you back to some degree.

Keeping yourself motivated and positive is one of the best things that you can do for your acting career. So don’t pay attention to anyone’s comments that make you feel good in the moment and really bad later on. Just know that you, with persistence and dedication, will make your mark in the industry soon enough.
