If you are going to use social media, you need to be able to use it to your advantage. If you are going to be on Instagram with a public profile that any one can find easily it is important you treat it as a business tool, and not as something that could stop you from getting any type of jobs. Did you know that before booking you for work, there are networks that will look into your social media to verify that you are the correct person to be representing their brand? Did you know that this is actually something that can and has stopped people from being hired in the past? Don’t let something like this happen to you!
Your Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and social media in general need to be accurate representations of you as an artist and what you represent. If you are trying to book work on the Disney Channel, for example, you would not want to post pictures that have more of an R rating, because they do not like to represent that sort of thing at Disney. If you are geared towards working in the horror genre, you would want to post more things having to do with horror. It’s a simple rule, that can be difficult to follow at times, but that is absolutely necessary.
For actors starting out in their career with fewer credits, I would highly suggest gearing your social media to a more general populous, you may have a dream of doing a highly dramatic film about murderers one day, but what happens when you get to Nickeldeon tomorrow to test for a pilot and they look at your social media only to see very graphic images you’ve shared. They would be less likely to hire you because you are not a component part of what they represent.
Think about working with likeminded people. You want to work with people who have a similar point of view to your own, and you want to make sure you are gearing your content to the correct audiences (which would mean being smart in your casting and using the correct people). So think about this, the next time you post something to Instagram that you aren’t sure you should be.
Save yourself some potential pain and annoyances and keep your social media clean and “social.” It could help you out in the long run.
