When you’re starting out looking for an agent, or trying to get a new one, you don’t want to just jump into bed with the first agent that says yes. You may think that the best move in your career is to just have AN agent- ANY agent. But think again. Would you want an agent that only has good connections to and sends you out for horror films when you really want to be a comedic actor? It probably would not benefit the career that you want to be creating.

You need to do as much research as you can on your agents that you are trying to get, to make sure that they are really the right type of agent for you. One thing you want to make sure that you have a grasp of is whom they represent. The other types of actors that they are representing should be people who are doing the same type or general category of thing that you are interested in. They should, preferably, be working actors. If your agents have a ton of clients who are actively booking in the industry it means that they are producing high quality work, and there’s nothing better than being around a lot of success because it only pushes you to become more successful.

Make sure that when you meet with the agent, you get along with them. That is one of the more important parts in having an agent that, unfortunately, is overlooked by a lot of actors. They meet with an agent and know that they will not get along with them, but force the relationship regardless. If an agent doesn’t feel a good connection to this actor, chances are, they will not want to represent them. But sometimes actors can forget that their agent is the one who will be with them through a very large and good portion of their career, so it is important that this is a good relationship.

All in all, you want to make sure that your agent is someone whom you know will be able to further your career in the way that you want and need it to be forwarded. There is no better way to put it than that. If you meet with an agent and get a bad vibe, or see that who they represent is not who you aspire to be, seek representation elsewhere.
